John Steski wins COMCO Cash Spiel |
John Steski (Ottawa, ON) wins the COMCO Cash Spiel, defeating Cory Heggestad (Stroud, ON) 5-2 at the Stroud Curling Club in Innisfil, Canada. Steski as skip throwing lead stones with Jordie Lyon-Hatcher throwing the last stones along with Brett Lyon-Hatcher at third and Matt Haughn at second take home the $3,600CDN first place cheque along with 15.441 world ranking points, while Heggestad receives $1,800CDN and 12.133 world ranking points for their second place finish.
Steski opened the scoring stealing 1 in the first end, then forced Heggestad to a single in the second end. After blanking 2 ends, Steski scored 2 in the fifth end to extend lead to 3-1, then forced Heggestad to a single in the sixth end. Steski scored 2 in the seventh end and held on for the 5-2 win.
In the semifinals, Steski defeated Jeff Brown (North Bay, NONT) 6-5 and Heggestad defeated Jim Bell (Unionville, ON) 8-4. Brown and Bell earned $1,200CDN and 9.375 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Steski defeated Pat Ferris (Grimsby, ON) 4-3, Heggestad defeated Al Corbeil (Alliston, ON) 7-1, while Brown defeated Randy Flegel (Stroud, ON) 6-3 and Bell defeated Steve Allen (Ottawa, ON) 10-6. Corbeil, Ferris, Allen and Flegel earned $800CDN along with 6.618 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.
Steski advanced to the playoffs through an extra game qualifier, winning 7-1 over Brent Gray (Kitchener-Waterloo, ON) to advance to the playoffs. Steski went 2-1 in the 20 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Steski defeated Terry Corbin (Brantford, ON) 7-2, losing their next game to Brown 4-3, then responded with a 8-3 win over Daryl Shane (Listowel, ON). |
